Female Characters in Video Games

Day 2 of my interviews for my new job in Mobile Gaming education, my boss tasks me with what appeared to be an easy task.  “Pick a mobile gaming character that represents you.  This seemed easy enough, and then it got real.  I started to think about what kind of persona this chosen icon of myself, an avatar of sorts, would project to everyone, particularly new students or other people I didnt know yet.  Would I choose some stereotypical trope and contribute to objectification of women?  I thought not! So I did research… yes I am an absolute nerd.  I found the list of female characters in games.   Hmmmm…    I was reminded of Alyx Vance in Half-Life.   Strong, smart, beautiful, complex, can fight, a hacker!  Perfect!!! But the limit was also that the character has to be in a mobile game. 

Damn!  So, back to basics….I chose Storm, from X-Men.  Also a powerful woman who is smart, a great fighter, and while a bit stereotypical, she IS a superhero.
